As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this exceptionally well carved Meiji period 1868-1912 boxwood Okimono, carved to depict a traditional Japanese festival known as Setsubun , this is the day before Spring celebrated annually on the 3rd February, the festival goers perform a special ritual known as Mamemaki ( “Bean scattering”) to drive away evil spirits , in this Okimono the artist has portrayed a character throwing a handful of Beans at an Oni (evil spirit) with the intention of driving him away, the scene captured in stunning detail and carved from one piece of wood , a fine addition to your Japanese works of art collection , artist signed to the underside by Yoshikazu, clearly a highly competent Meiji period carver .
