As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large scale Meiji Period (1868-1912) hexagonal form koro artist signed by the highly regarded Ryozan Okamoto, on this occasion working for the Yasuda company. This larger scale hexagonal form koro is painted with panels of birds in their natural settings to two sides as well as bijin and children in traditional garden landscape scenes to the remainder, the four interspersed panels pierced out in a fine honeycomb pattern, each bordered with fine black and gilt floral decoration similar to that used on the eight shaped bracket feet. The shoulders and lid of this impressive koro are painstakingly decorated in multi coloured opposing geometric patterns beneth a finely interwoven honeycomb reticulated lid, the purpose of the reticulation is not only decorative but provides a method of escape for the incence. The underside of the koro is fully signed by Ryozan Okamoto and bears the Yasuda company seal central to a hand painted sprig of flora.
