As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this fine example of a Meiji Period (1868-1912) gilt bronze decorated vase by the highly regarded Miyao Eisuke company of Yokohama. On this occasion we have a large scale single vase of tapered waisted form with carrying handles formed as mythical beast. The vase itself displays two opposing scenes within central heart shaped cartouches, one scene depicts travellers strolling alongside a meandering river, one charactor stooping to tie his shoe, the reverse a more tranquil scene of birds in flight above a garden of chrysanthemun and bamboo, this panel signed in a gilt tablet. The main body of the vase is very finely stippled in a nanako style ground with lavish gold phoenix in flight amidst trailing flora, the shoulders are decorated with a band of fans each featuring charming individual scenes of fish, birds and flora above which sits a final band of phoenix ( Ho-ho ) in flight, each of these bands are very finely textured to a hammered bronze surface, the sturdy neck rim finished in Greek key pattern, the signature seal is that of Miyao Eisuke. In this example we bring an interesting vase of fine quality and exceptional condition.

Literature :

The Miyao Company of Yokohama, under its founder Miyao Eisuke, was a prolific producer of medium to large-scale patinated and gilded bronze ornamental sculptures as well as vases and flower containers. These works often depicted characters from Japanese legend and mythology and as such appealed both to the Japanese market, where the subject matter would be clearly understood, and the Western market where the sheer exoticism of the subject matter together with fine workmanship would appeal. As with many companies during this period production was vast, as such qualities could vary depending on the size, volume and level of intricacy, as demand increased Miyao company moved into further outlets in Tokyo.
