As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this most interesting Meiji Period (1868-1912) damascened iron lidded table box. The unusual scene on the lid of this box plays out a Noh drama upon a theatre stage, the characters finely decorated in mixed alloys perform to a backdrop of vibrant turquoise enamel pine trees upon silver, a bridge from the stage draws you to a further enamel coloured curtain in the distance. The exterior of this heavy iron box is carved and further decorated with damascened gold clouds interspersed with mixed gold decorated pine saplings, the underside scattered with abstract two colour gold decoration beside the artists seal. Removing the lid reveals a further surprise, the shakudo interior is decorated with a band of musicians likely playing out Noh songs for the actors on the stage, this panel artist signed Noriaki, a most unusual fine quality lidded box to add to your Japanese metalwork collection.
