As part of our Japanese art collection we are delighted to offer this simply stunning quality copper and mixed metal Koro , the main body of the Koro stands on three squat feet and depicts an array of different sized Shi Shi dogs in high relief amidst swirling stylised waves , the shoulders are moulded in geometric honeycomb style pattern and further decorated in two colour gilt floral swags, the inner lining is silvered to mirror the lining of the superbly chiselled mixed metal lid , the mixed metal floral lid is bordered by a superbly decorated and gilded band of cut chrysanthemum mon , the lid finial has been formed as a cast silver Shi Shi dog with inlaid gold eyes who sits holding a gold ball beneath his paw .
This Koro is fully hand beaten from the inside and as you can see is of incredible high quality , it has a circular impressed signature seal to the underside which we are currently trying to translate, the form is the manner of an artist called Shoami Katsuyoshi , but it is not his seal mark , if we can get it translated we will of course update the information , for now we are selling the piece as “artist unknown” although he clearly deserves to be recognised , UPDATE: Our very experienced Japanese signature translator has read part of the seal as Watanabe, (a known Japanese surname)
The condition is simply breath-taking !!
