As part of our Japanese art collection we are delighted to offer this large and incredibly heavy gilt bronze figure of Kannon Bodhisattva , Kannon is highly revered in many forms throughout the Asian world and in particular in Buddhism , in China she is known as Guan-yin , essentially she is worshipped throughout as the God or Goddess of mercy and compassion , this particular representation sees Kannon holding the Lotus plant a Buddhist symbol of purity and enlightenment , the Goddess is wearing a gilt decorated robe depicting Phoenix (Ho-o birds) and is further decorated in loose hanging gilded metal jewels, her removable gilt jewelled headdress is surmounted by a Buddha upon a Lotus leaf base , she stands upon a hardwood base and is signed to the rear in an oblong tablet.
Condition report: lovely and original with age related cleaning wear leaving her with a rich patination.
