As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large Meiji Period (1868-1912) Satsuma bowl, exquisitely painted by the well recorded artist Ryuzan. The exterior rim of the bowl is literally dripping with native flora including chrysanthemum, hibiscus, iris and peonies above swarms of insects including fire flys crickets and cicadas , a most unusul subject matter painted in extraordinary detail. The interior of the bowl finely decorated with a kaleidescope of multicolour butterflies painted in minute detail, the top and foot rims finely gilded in key fret and shippo tsunugi cash decoration, providing a perfect contrast to the lavish decoration. The underside of the bowl bears the gilt seal that reads ” Dai Nihon Kyoro fu Ryuzan tsukuru”. made by Ryuzan of great Japan.
