As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this outstanding large scale Meiji Period 1868-1912 silk textile depicting a pair of peacocks within a landscape setting. These beautiful birds are at rest on a hillside setting beside a pine tree and beneath a backdrop of trailing wisteria and native flora. The area above the birds finely picked out in clouds of couched gold thread in order to provide a perfect contrast to the vast floral display, as well as a sure sign of a highly prized and important work of art. This huge scale textile scene bordered with a contrasting silk brocade depicting ho-ho birds in flight amidst flora.Quite simply a magnificent highly decorative huge scale piece of wall art from the Meiji Period .
Literature:
It is difficult to imagine the hundreds of hours required by multiple skilled workers to produce a textile of this size, with tens of thousands of stitches required, it was a painstaking workload that was very likely destined for a weathy merchant or perhaps one of the overseas exhibitions of the period.
The textile has since been pinned to three backboards and framed within a perspex display case for protection. Please excuse the raw images of the piece in situ in a warehouse as it arrived from the container, but hopefully they provide an idea of the sheer scale and magnitude of this piece . This style of contemporary framing suited the previous owner who by repute hung it in their New York apartment. Naturally it is personal choice and this boxed frame can be removed if required, and the textile carefully rolled for transporation ready to simply rehang to suit your room setting.
Condition report :
After 120 plus years of exposure to light and elements I am pleased to say that the textile still displays very well as I hope you can see in the main images, there is obviously natural fading which is consistent throughout the piece. However , loose theads and or losses are absolutely minimal based on the scale of the piece, a tiny area around the standing birds foot is evident, but overall it has been remarkably well preserved when you consider there is over 48 square feet of stitching, it is over 120 years old and has clearly travelled many thousands of miles during its life.
