As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this simply breath-taking quality and condition mixed media vase from the mid Meiji period, the iron bodied vase is predominantly decorated with multi coloured enamel Peonies and onlaid mixed metal foliage, the slender neck of the vase has been superbly decorated with finely detailed Gold decoration in the Damascened manner , the base and neck are mounted in solid silver and the vase is signed Unno Katsumori with a Gold Tokyo seal , the artist is well documented and sadly died at the tender age of 34, he was certainly a very skilled young man and from a family of very famous metalworkers .
Unno Katsumori, his given name Tatsunosuke, was the second son of Unno Bisei I (Unno Yoshimori I 1785-1862) , whose grandson Unno Bisei II (Unno Yoshimori II 1864-1919) became one of the most celebrated metal artists of the Meiji period and professor at the Tokyo school of fine arts .
Unno Katsumori is listed on page 300 of the Toso Kinko Jiten, Wakayama Takeshi , published 1984 .
Provenance: This vase was amongst a small but high quality group of Japanese items bequeathed to a UK boarding school in the early 20th century by a former pupil , remarkably the goods remained in the headmasters office for many decades until 2014 when the current committee decided to sell the items to fund the further education of a group of female pupils, please see our other items from that collection in the coming days.
The condition is superb !
