As part of our Japanese art collection we are delighted to offer this most unusual Meiji period (1868 – 1912) tray or wall hanging panel , the main lacquer body is overlaid with carved inter woven abalone shell encapsulated within a silver rim , the Shibayama style decoration is then on-laid onto the shell and depicts butterflies amidst a floral backdrop , signed in a red two character signature , a most charming decorative object .
Condition report:
Great with no losses , damage or restorations , we would note some expected wear to the rear lacquer edge caused by the consistent cleaning of the silver rim.
