As part of our Japanese art collection we are delighted to offer this fine old iron Tsuba (sword guard) from the late 17th-early 18th century (Edo Period 1615-1868), the Tsuba is more commonly known as a Shingen Tsuba after the famous Daimyo and warlord Takeda Shingen , the large very strong Tsuba would have been used on a Samurai Katana (large sword) the decoration to the border is known as Mukade or Centipede decoration , the centre of the Tsuba nicely pierced for further effect , as you will see from the images this is a real antique Tsuba and well used item as opposed to a later copy aimed at the export market.
