As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to offer this large and heavy Japanese mixed metal charger , the central scene depicts a goose coming in to land on a frozen stream , other geese stand amongst a snowy lakeside landscape, the geese are finely chiselled in shakudo with gold highlights , the landscape is picked out in gold, silver ,shibuichi and other alloys laid upon an iron coloured ground , the exterior of this panel is further decorated with six individual segments each finely onlaid with a mixture of alloys depicting exotic birds amongst flora.
A very fine example of early Meiji period metalwork probably by an ex tsuba maker or swordsmith, the birds are all hand chiselled and the onlaid detail is nicely hand crafted.
