As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this stunning Japanese Ivory Okimono, rather unusually made by the Maruki company who were better known for their high quality Metalware during the Meiji period, however occasionally they would commission an artist to manufacture an Ivory object, these items would usually be of exceptionally high quality and always carry the six character Maruki seal (as in this instance)  sometimes accompanied by the individual artists signature.

This particular Okimono depicts a Samurai Warrior struggling to carry the large Conch Shell tied to his back, whilst being held back by six mischievous Kappa, the multi images will show the full story, but the artist has captured a most humorous scene, the fine detailing and in particular the facial expressions and claws of these mythical creatures are carved to an exceptional standard, this very chunky top drawer Okimono would enhance any serious Japanese collection, signed to the underside in a six character ivory seal that reads Nihon-koku Maruki-sei [Made by Maruki, Japan].

The condition of this very intricate carving is superb with minor age related hairlines cracks.
